What are the materials available for chrome plated rods?

Our factory is a professional chrome plated bar manufacturer in China.

Chrome plated rods are crucial components of hydraulic piston rods and pneumatic piston rods, and find widespread use across various industries, particularly in the machinery sector.

Given their extensive usage, the selection of materials for producing chrome plated rods has become increasingly important as the quality of the steel used can significantly impact the product’s service life. Moreover, different materials can also give rise to varying performance and characteristics of the chrome plated rods. Therefore, it is essential to understand the commonly employed materials for manufacturing chrome plated rods.

The popular steel materials for making chrome plated rods are as follows:

1. CK45 / SAE 1045 / C45 / 45# steel.

CK45 steel, also known as SA1045, C45, C45E, and 45# steel, has the same chemical composition and mechanical properties regardless of the standard used to define it.

This high-quality carbon structural steel exhibits good hot and cold processing properties and high strength. To be considered qualified, CK45 steel must have a hardness greater than HRC55 after quenching and not tempering. Re-quenching and heat treatment can result in a hardness of HRC42-46, meeting both the mechanical and surface hardness requirements. CK45 chrome plated bar is the most commonly used material for chrome plated rods and is referred to as 1045 Chrome Plated Rod in the United States.

2. 42CrMo / 42CrMo4 / SAE 4140

With its high strength and excellent properties, 42CrMo is a popular German standard alloy steel, also well-known in China and America as SAE 4140. This quenched and tempered material can achieve superior toughness, plasticity, and wear resistance through proper heat treatment. Furthermore, it possesses excellent mechanical properties, low temperature impact toughness, and low notch sensitivity after quenching and tempering. Additionally, 42CrMo is suitable for cyanidation and induction hardening. To learn more about this material, please visit our website for 4140 chrome plated bar.

3. Gcr15.

GCr15 steel is a kind of high carbon chromium bearing steel with less alloy content, which has relatively high hardenability, and can obtain high and uniform hardness after heat treatment. When it is quenched and tempered at low temperature, it can have high hardness, uniform structure, good wear resistance and relatively high contact fatigue performance, and it is sensitive to the formation of white spots and has tempering brittleness.

4. 27SiMn

5. ST52 /ST52.3 /E355 / Q345

ST52, also known as E355, is equivalent to Q345 in China and SAE 1026 in America. Although not commonly used for chrome plated bars, this material is often used to manufacture chrome plated hollow bar.

6. Stainless steel 304.

304 stainless steel is an American ASTM standard grade of stainless steel, characterized by high corrosion resistance, good plasticity, and toughness at different temperatures. It also exhibits good cold forming and weldability. However, it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment due to its austenite’s lack of phase transformation during heating.
