2. 42CrMo steel / SAE 4140 steel
Hard chrome plated shaft often utilizes 42CrMo steel as a popular material choice. This steel is classified as a medium carbon quenched and tempered steel and is widely used in the machinery manufacturing industry. It is the equivalent of US standard SAE 4140 steel. With proper heat treatment, 42CrMo steel can achieve a certain level of toughness, plasticity, and wear resistance. Due to its higher hardenability compared to 1045 steel, it is particularly suited for surface hardening treatments such as high frequency quenching and flame quenching. The 42CrMo chrome plated bar is also commonly referred to as 4140 chrome plated bar.
