What are the materials for chrome plated rods?

chrome plated rods are highly sought after in the machinery industry due to their exceptional hardness, heat resistance, wear resistance, and chemical stability. There are a number of different materials used for the chrome plated rods for different applications. Here below are the brief introduction of some popular materials of chrome plated rods.

1. SAE 1045 steel

The preferred material for chrome-plated rods is 1045 steel, which is classified as a medium carbon quenched and tempered structural steel. Its mechanical properties are impressive, and it has the potential for high strength and good machinability. When quenched and tempered or normalized, it can deliver better cutting performance, greater strength, and enhanced toughness. To enhance surface hardness and leverage the exceptional mechanical properties of 1045 steel, it can undergo surface quenching, high frequency quenching, or direct quenching. Our most sought-after chrome plated rod product is the 1045 chrome plated rod.

SAE 1045 steel is a medium carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.45%, which makes it a popular choice for applications that require moderate strength and toughness. It is commonly used in machinery parts, shafts, gears, axles, bolts, studs, and hydraulic cylinders. SAE 1045 steel can be heat treated to enhance its properties, such as hardness, strength, and wear resistance. It is also known as AISI 1045 steel. And SAE 1045 steel is equivalent to DIN CK45 / C45 / CE45 also.

2. 42CrMo steel / SAE 4140 steel

Hard chrome plated shaft often utilizes 42CrMo steel as a popular material choice. This steel is classified as a medium carbon quenched and tempered steel and is widely used in the machinery manufacturing industry. It is the equivalent of US standard SAE 4140 steel. With proper heat treatment, 42CrMo steel can achieve a certain level of toughness, plasticity, and wear resistance. Due to its higher hardenability compared to 1045 steel, it is particularly suited for surface hardening treatments such as high frequency quenching and flame quenching. The 42CrMo chrome plated bar is also commonly referred to as 4140 chrome plated bar.

Chrome-plated rods are often made of 1045 steel or 42Cr steel, both of which are popular chrome-plating materials. These materials provide the rods with exceptional hardness, which can be adjusted between 400 to 1200HV by altering the plating solution’s composition or modifying the process conditions.

3. Other materials for chrome plated bar

In addition to SAE 1045 and 42CrMo, a variety of materials can be used for chrome plated bars. Refer to the following table for the material specifications of chrome plated rods.
